(SMYRNA, Del.)- A Smyrna mother left her special needs child locked in a car while she went shopping in an Acme late Wednesday afternoon.
"No way I would never do that to a kid. It's not right," said Joe Biro, of Smyrna.
Smyrna Police say they were forced to break into the woman's car to free the autistic child, who had been locked inside for more than 20 minutes.
"If you're going to bring your child with you, you should bring them in the store. It's so hot out and the car's like an oven the child could have died," said Ryan Boomer, of Smyrna.
Officers contacted the child's mother,Inga Gillett-Spio,37, of Smyrna, and charged her with endangering the welfare of a child.
"Any child should not be left in the car alone in the heat like this. Whatever she's getting charged with, she deserves," said Biro.
Smyrna Police say they contacted Delaware Division of Family Services regarding the investigation.
"I don't have any kids but if I did have a kid I would definitely not do anything like that. That's definitely neglecting," said Jeremy Furman, of Smyrna.
Gillett-Spio was later released on a $1,000 unsecured bail.
