Native Americans in Sussex County Host Pow Wow

(Millsboro, Del.)- Native American tribes from all over the country came to Millsboro to represent their culture and heritage at the 37th annual Nanticoke Indian Pow Wow.

"We do it for our heritage and our culture because that's what we feel strongly about and also the main thing is that it is fun," said Chickahominy Tribe member, Aaron Montez.

There was also a wide variety of handmade goods sold at the different vendors. Anton Martinez, a Yaqui Tribe member, traveled all the way from Tucson, AZ to represent his tribe.

"To us it's very important to carry on the tradition of the Pow Wow," said Martinez. "Our native people seem to be decreasing in numbers, popularity so it's important for us to continue this tradition."

William Daisey, the Nanticoke Chief, shares that goal of keeping tradition alive.

"We've been trying to preserve our heritage and culture for many years. We do not want to lose that," said Daisey.

Proceeds from the Pow Wow will fund scholarships for younger members of the tribe and will also help fund the Nanticoke Indian Museum.
