GEORGETOWN, Del.- Nearly 72,000 pets have been adopted nationwide during NBC and Telemundo’s Clear The Shelters month heading into the final weekend.
Brandywine Valley SPCA has been doing their part in joining the cause. The shelter launched a promotion that waives adoption fees for cats. Lifesaving Coordinator Bailey Wingate said that the promotion has been a great success.
"We had a lot of adoptions come along for our cats who are six plus months," Wingate said. "All adoption fees are waived for our cats that are six months plus and its been really successful."
Over two days last week, 79 dogs were flown to Delaware from Alabama and taken in by the Brandywine Valley SPCA. Those canines were transported out of the path of Hurricane Laura before it made landfall on the Gulf Coast. One of them being Lizard, a white husky.
"Those animals can come up here and get adopted," Wingate added. "Then, that would make some space down in Alabama and the surrounding states so they can help reunite other pets lost in the storm with their families."
If not interested in adopting an animal, there are many ways you can get involved with your local shelter. First, you can foster an animal. Second, you can donate to your local shelter. And third, you can volunteer your time and work with what will become your furry friends.>
Many volunteers were on hand today cleaning up rooms and walking and playing with the animals. Donations are being accepted with focus on animals impacted by Hurricane Laura.

Wingate suggests if considering adoption to bring an entire family and other pets in to meet the animal you are interested in. It allows the dog or cat to get comfortable more quickly. If you have the opportunity to foster before considering adoption, that option is always on the table.
Although Clear the Shelters is coming to a close, there is no stop to changing the lives of sheltered animals.
