(LEWES Del.)- Neighbors and officers in Lewes enjoyed their version of National Night out Tuesday.
National Night Out is an event adopted by towns and cities all over the nation. It has been going strong in Lewes for 23 years.
Sergeant Sherrie Harmon said this event improves the bond between officers and community members.
"It creates that bond," Harmon said. "It makes officers more approachable. People will feel better about approaching law enforcement to talk about a problem or even just to talk."
Mike Tyler is a member of the Lewes Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory. He has been involved with National Night Out for 20 years. He spent the evening reminding young bike riders about safety tips and making sure helmets fit properly.
"It brings the community together," Tyler said. "We're such a small town and everyone knows everyone. It's a way for everyone to come together and relate."
Tyrone Woodyard has been an officer for 11 years. He brought his K-9 officer along to the event.
"Tonight we're going to demonstrate what it's like to find narcotics in a vehicle. We'll also show what it's like to apprehend someone who's getting away from us."
He also said this event allows him to connect with the people he serves every day.
"I've had people come up to me while i'm responding to a situation, and they remember me. It makes them feel more comfortable when they explain details about a situation."
Hundreds showed up for the event in Lewes. Several towns on Delmarva will host National Night Out events in the coming weeks.
Events include:
Rehoboth Night Out: 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Milton Park on Union Street.
Greenwood Night Out: 6 p.m. Tuesday, August 11 at the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company.
