New Blooms and New Art, The Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek Reopens

DAGSBORO, Del.- New blooms and new color! After a stressful year, and months inside...

"How do I feel when I come to the gardens? I feel like I've escaped COVID, like it's where I'm supposed to be in nature, and I can't stress enough how much fun families have when they come out here," said Brent Baker with the gardens.

Music to his ears. The yellow folly garden grabs your eye, with over 35-thousand bulbs.

"Every year and even at your own gardens at home, it gets larger and larger and the flowers are stronger so you get more blossoms," said Carol McCloud with the gardens.

Walking around the 37-acres, you'll notice naturally occurring ponds called vernal pools. They fill up in the spring with rain water, and provide fresh water for animals.

Another new attraction is artwork. Created by local artist Leah Beach, a new piece welcomes you to the gardens. The art is the newest art on the Delaware Discoveries Trail.

"The goal is for people to come in, stop by, and then hopefully walk around our beautiful gardens," said McCloud.

Admission is 12 dollars for non-members, but free for anyone under 16. This year, visitors can get up close and personal with foliage, and even animals. The new, living shore line prevents erosion from Pepper Creek, with a new walkway that takes you up to the water; perfect for bird watching.

"The birds are in the woods and then they come feed in the meadow. New blue bird boxes. We put up blue bird boxes two days ago and they're already occupied. You know how real estate is in Southern Delaware!" said Baker.

The gardens are open Thursday-Sunday, with guided tours offered Thursdays and Saturdays. You need a reservation to stop by.
