Delaware Tree Friendly Community program shifting to two-year cycle

The Delaware Forest Service is changing the application timeline for one of its top community recognition programs. Beginning in 2026, applications for the Tree Friendly Community program will only be accepted in even-numbered years.

DELAWARE- The Delaware Forest Service is updating the application timeline for one of its top community recognition programs.

Beginning in 2026, applications for the Tree Friendly Community program will be accepted only in even-numbered years. The change establishes a two-year recognition cycle. For example, a community that applies and is accepted in 2026 will be recognized through 2028.

Previously, applications were accepted annually. Under the new system, communities must reapply every two years to maintain their status.

Applications for the next recognition cycle will open in 2026. Questions about eligibility or requirements can be directed to the Delaware Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry team.
