SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - The Delaware Department Of Natural Resources and Environmental Control is asking hunters in Sussex County to keep an eye out for Delmarva fox squirrels this hunting season.

According to DNREC, the Delmarva fox squirrel is a sub-species of the fox squirrel, found only on the Delmarva Peninsula. The agency has implemented a conservation plan that involves a project to move squirrels from Maryland into southern Delaware.

DNREC says its biologists have released Delmarva fox squirrels to Assawoman Wildlife Area, Redden State Forest, and Trap Pond State Park and that some of those squirrels have moved from those release sites.

The gray squirrel can be found in Sussex County, but their fur almost always has some brown, while Delmarva fox squirrels do not. The fox squirrels appear more silver, according to DNREC.

DNREC is asking for hunters to send in photos and location information of Delmarva fox squirrels to Matthew.Zak@Delaware.gov.
