SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Lifeguards from across Delaware’s coast received free skin cancer screenings thanks to a new partnership between the Sussex County Lifesaving Association, Coastal Dermatology, and the Big Chill Beach Club.

The June 9 event at the Big Chill Beach Club provided preventive care from board-certified dermatology specialists. The Coastal Dermatology members volunteered their time to screen lifeguards for early signs of skin cancer for those spending several hours in the sun a day.

“This initiative is about taking care of the people who take care of us,” said SCLA President Matt Farlow. "Our lifeguards are exposed to intense sun exposure all season long."

Organizers hope the event will spark more sun safety initiatives for lifeguards and others who spend extended time outdoors during the summer.
