MARYLAND - Maryland faces a distressing surge in car crash related deaths, reporting 38 lives lost in November alone, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
Year-to-date, the tally stands at 554 deaths, including 135 pedestrians and 15 bicyclists—a 7.6% increase from 2022. The department says the state is poised to exceed 600 deaths in 2023, the first time that number has been since 2007.
MDOT transportation officials urgently call for a rededication to road safety, stressing the preventable nature of these accidents.
Some critical safety measures MDOT recommends include refraining from driving under the influence, ensuring proper restraints for all vehicle occupants, adhering to safe speeds for conditions, eliminating distractions, exercising caution for vulnerable road users, and complying with laws requiring drivers to slow down or change lanes for stopped vehicles.
