Ocean City Short on Lifeguards

(OCEAN CITY, Md.) - Keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand. Lieutenant Ward Kovacks said folks should pay attention to their surroundings on the beach this Labor Day weekend.

"Walk over to a lifeguard chair so you make sure you're near a lifeguard," Kovacks said. "The most important thing is do not get in the water unless a lifeguard is on duty."

He said many lifeguards are heading back to school for the fall. People should be extra careful since there aren't as many to guard the shore.

Joe Kern said his family of four keeps an eye our for rough surf no matter how many lifeguards are on duty.

"I think it's important to keep an eye on the kids," Kern said. Even if there is a lifeguard on duty. They have a lot of people to watch out for. We only have two."

Beach patrol guards said they encourage people to get to know the lifeguards in their area. They can update you on the surf conditions throughout the day.
