(HOCKESSIN, Del.)- The Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit has identified the 69 year old Hockessin man who was the operator of the 2000 Honda CRV which was involved in the fatal motor vehicle crash on Lancaster Pike this morning as Vijayachandra Babu.
Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash which has claimed the life of a 69 year old man and injured four others that occurred late Monday night in Hockessin.
The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred on Monday, March 23, 2015, at approximately 10:36 p.m., as a 69 year old Hockessin, man was operating a 2000 Honda CRV and was attempting to make a left hand turn from westbound Old Wilmington Road onto southbound Lancaster Pike (DE Rt. 48) in Hockessin.
The Honda, which had been stopped at a posted stop sign, drove directly into the path of a 2000 Saab 95, which was traveling on northbound Lancaster Pike, and which was being operated by Austin V. Griffith, 19, of Wilmington.
The front of the Saab then struck the left hand side of the Honda. After the impact the Saab came to rest in the northbound lane of Lancaster Pike while the Honda continued traveling in a northwesterly direction, coming to rest on the southbound shoulder.
The 69 year old male operator of the Honda, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was removed from the scene by Emergency Medical Services and transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead.
A 73 year old female passenger in the Honda, who was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, was also removed from the scene and transported to the Christiana Hospital where she has been admitted with serious injuries.
Austin Griffith, as well as a 17 year old female passenger from Wilmington, and a 19 year old male passenger from Wilmington, were all properly restrained at the time of the crash. They were also removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital where they were admitted with non-life threatening injuries.
This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. Alcohol is not being considered as a factor in the crash.
Lancaster Pike was closed in both directions for approximately 2 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
