(MILFORD, De.)- The Milford School District referendum has been approved.
The referendum will increase property taxes for Milford residences in order to provide the schools with more money.
A few thousand people voted yesterday and yet today the community is still divided on the issue:
"I'm against it, because if you have a budget and you lower your costs and stick to their budget then they won't need to keep having referendums," said Milford resident Bonnie McCann.
Another point of view from local business owner, Maggie Mae "it will effect my business in a positive way, we are trying to revitalize this sleepy little town of Milford."
Mae feels that if the schools improve, more people will move to the area, bringing more business to downtown Milford.
Milford Superintendent, Dr. Phyllis Kohl, was ecstatic today about last nights vote.
She explained what her top three priorities are for the district with the extra funding:
1. Giving teachers a raise, so that their salaries will be competitive with nearby local school districts
2. Replace student programs they had to cut due to limited funds
3. Investigate new learning opportunities for students.
Looking into the future, Superintendent Kohl, said that the new hospital coming to Milford will likely lead to more students in the schools.
Kohl plans on promoting an additional referendum within the next 5 years in order to construct an additional Milford school.
