REHOBOTH BEACH, Del - Rehoboth Beach's Environmental Management Committee held a virtual meeting Friday discussing the possibility of the town forming a plan to tackle climate change. The meeting invited input from developers of Newark's 2019 Climate Action Plan to gain additional insight.
Mike Fortner of Newark's Planning and Development Department, acknowledged the stark differences between the two towns in terms of population size and geography, while noting how a number of ideas could work in Rehoboth's unique community.
“You have a lot going for you because that’s your beach. You have a lot of restaurants. It’s very walkable," said Fortner. He continued suggesting, "there could be some workable arrangements there so all the cars aren’t driving in. Plastics. How can tourists come in and not have to rely on plastic forks and all that."
The virtual gathering was largely a meeting of the minds with no official plans for Rehoboth Beach set in stone just yet. Discussion centered in part around structural changes that could make the town a more bike-able, walkable, and transit oriented community.
Both groups look to continue meeting and discussing strategies for change as plans develop.
