Rehoboth Beach Patrol Begins 100th Season With Ringing Of Bell By Mayor Stan Mills

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- The bell sounded at 9:30 a.m. Saturday making the beach open for business.

Although the red flag was up, members of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol still had to get to their posts.

Mayor Stan Mills joined the patrol this morning to wish them the best of luck over the next several months and to let everyone know the nation's summer capital is ready to welcome visitors.

"The ringing of the bell is a reminder of the commitment and dedication of our men and women of the beach patrol," Mills said. "They have a lot of training that they go through and they serve as our safety officials for the beach environment."

The bell will be rung every morning all season long to inform everyone that the patrol is ready for duty.

While Saturday was a no go for swimming, the lifeguards were still out on the beach. New captain Jeff Giles had advice for beachgoers and swimmers when the weather gets better.

"Just use your common sense," Giles said.  "Be mindful of others around you and keep an eye out for everybody. Everybody on the beach is always watching and taking care of each other. So, we will watch the beach. We're going to be here to help you in the surf."

Mills says it will be a great summer as long as everyone is safe and supporting businesses who are looking for a successful season after the pandemic plagued last summer.

"There's all these wonderful things to do regardless of the weather and we hope everyone comes and enjoys themselves," Mills said.

The Rehoboth Beach Patrol still has some openings that need to be filled. If you would like to join the 100th crew, visit https://www.rehobothbeachpatrol.com/employment/.
