Rehoboth Beach Plans For Labor Day Weekend With Festivities & Short-Staffed Businesses

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Red, white, and blue is draped around buildings and the Rehoboth Beach bandstand and rightfully so ahead of Labor Day Weekend.

President of the Rehoboth-Dewey Chamber of Commerce Carol Everhart says it plans to celebrate in a big way.

"The chamber is doing the 'Beach goes Red, White, and Blue' and it has a number of activities around the bandstand," Everhart says. "It involves our military and first responders and it's just a thank you."

Many businesses will have a challenging weekend ahead as they deal with staffing shortages. Cooter Brown's manager Lisa Carangio says having some high school students around will have to suffice.

"We're still trying to hire. We're still trying to train. We're still trying to get a grip," Carangio said. "Things have gotten better over the last I'd say month, month and a half."

Down the street on Rehoboth Avenue, the Coffee House powered by Schell Brothers is dealing with the same. This is manager Michael Yerkes first week on the job but he says there is a lot to prepare ahead of Labor Day.

"We definitely have to get a lot more supplies and make sure a lot more fully well-stocked," Yerkes said. "Try to do what we can with staffing at the moment. Thankfully we have a lot of high school kids here on staff. Great kids."

Although Labor Day weekend last year was about six months after the start of the pandemic, Rehoboth Beach was buzzing. Visitors are at the beach and looking forward to spending the holiday weekend in the nation's summer capital.

EJ and Ella Trzcinski are planning to do many fun activities this weekend,

"We're going to do some games and ride rides," Ella said. "Once down here I won a giant sloth that was as big as me."

A holiday weekend with a frenzy of fun on tap.
