Rehoboth Beach Police save man from Jumping off Bridge

(Rehoboth Beach, Del) - On the Thursday afternoon April 20th, 2017, two Rehoboth Beach Police officers were called to the State Route 1 Rehoboth Lewes Canal Bridge located between Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach for reports of a "kid" hanging over the rails of the north bound portion of the bridge.

Pfc. Josh Kosiorowski and Cpl. Curtis Sauve responded to the scene. As he was approaching the bridge from State Road, Cpl. Sauve could see a male sitting on the rail of the north bound span of the bridge facing north. Cpl. Sauve arrived shortly after, Pfc. Kosiorowski and observed that the male, a 25 year El Salvadorian man, had one leg hanging over the rail of the bridge and was looking down at the roadway over 30 feet below. According to the officers, the man appeared to be drinking an alcoholic beverage.

As they approached the man from the south side of the bridge, first by vehicle, then on foot, the officers observed that the man did not see them. Pfc. Kosiorowski acted quickly, but very quietly and approached the man from behind. Before the man realized what was occurring, Pfc. Kosiorowski was able to grab him around his upper torso and pull him from the rail to safety.

These events were captured on video and were released by the Rehoboth Beach Police Department on May 8th via Facebook and YouTube.

One of the primary missions of the Rehoboth Beach Police Department is to preserve of the lives of the citizens and visitors of our city. The actions of Pfc. Kosiorowski on April 20th illustrate the extent to which our officers are dedicated to this mission. Without regard for his own safety, knowing that if detected he could possibly be pulled off the bridge, Pfc. Kosiorowski acted bravely and prevented the loss of a life. His actions not only exemplify the quality and dedication of the men and women of the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, but officers throughout the State of Delaware and the great country in which we proudly serve.
