REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Traffic circles can be tricky, and especially busy, because of that, a committee downtown in Rehoboth Beach is focusing on traffic circle safety. attention now. "We've got to take steps toward being more bicycle friendly," said David Mann, a Rehoboth Beach Streets and Transportation Committee Member As work continues near the circle to create a new bike lane, the committee is moving discussions just down the road to the traffic circle. The committee says the area is dangerous, and that people are lucky there aren't more serious accidents in the area. Mann said, "The circle continues to be high approached speeds, lack of knowledge or awareness of the crosswalks, it's a difficult place" One idea to make the circle safer: removing the lighthouse and brick wall. Pat Coluzzi, a Rehoboth Beach Commissioner on the committee said, "I don't frankly ever seeing that happen." Shutting down an idea that had come up as a solution in the past. The committee instead thinks adding more of the painted bike signs on the streets would help both bikers and drivers be more aware of traffic in the area. Also, the committee wouldn't mind seeing more signs, like the blinking lights that can be found in other areas downtown because the city is bracing for what could be its busiest season yet. Mann said, "It's still going to be problematic a month from now and certainly two months from now it's going to be, I just see increased traffic and I think we're going to be, I think we're going to get dissented upon this summer like we haven't seen in a long time because people can't leave the country." But more problems could stand in the way for traffic downtown in the coming months. Donna Mabry, a Rehoboth Beach Streets and Transportation Committee Member said, "If we're worried about the circle now and we're worried about in the day time, what's going to happen to the circle once, if Clear Space is there, and it's at night?" But the topic of Clear Space and the traffic circle was added the next months agenda for more discussion. Another solution the committee had to improve bike safety downtown was to actually have more of those summer, seasonal officers keep an eye out and make sure the rules are enforced so that bicyclists are not riding on the sidewalks downtown. Bicyclists are not allowed to ride on any streets downtown in Rehoboth Beach according to the city code.
