(Ocean City, MD) - In the middle of the storm clean up in Ocean City WRDE spoke with employees of the US Geological Survey Agency who were retrieving some equipment.
USGS employee Chris Lewis said "we're recovering storm surge sensors that we deployed before the storm."
The US Geological Survey agency serves the nation by
gathering information.
The hope is those details can reduce damage and save lives during a natural disaster.
These sensors provide information to help coastal areas better prepare for the next big storm
Lewis went on to say "it helps a lot of different agencies to use the data for mapping, flood inundation mapping and the local agencies just to see that at a five foot storm surge or whatever from the storm, this is the effect it has."
They attach the sensors to pilings and other permanent structures that they hope will stand up to a storm.
The data details storm surge, water pressure and other conditions.
They share it with other agencies and towns for review.
They've been deploying these types of sensors up and down the east coast since super storm sandy.
