LEWES, Del. - On Tuesday night, people in Lewes came together to learn more about the African-American struggle and triumphs through music. The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) presented a music program called “Finding Our Voice: Songs of Struggle and Inspiration.”
“I thought tonight was a wonderful celebration about our history, heritage, and struggle … it also gave me a great appreciation of what we’ve done and gone through as a people to get to where we are now,” said Joseph Lawson.
People learned about the African-American journey from slavery to freedom through song, with music provided by Christy Taylor and the Empowered Cultural Heritage Orchestra.
“It was going to be just a sing along with some people playing some instruments and next thing we knew we were turning it into a history program and tying it into Black History Month,” said Ann Loar Brooks of SDARJ.
They sang-a-long to songs that reflected the dark past of slavery and songs that played a major role in the Civil Rights movement.
Brooks says this program will run again on April 4th with the MLK committee. SDARJ will also be holding an African American Film Festival with the Rehoboth Beach Film Society February 14th - 16th.
