Seaford District Library Open For In-Person Services, Other Libraries Playing It Safe

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Many libraries remain closed to the public and are making ends meet with other methods of service, but Seaford District Library is an exception.

You are able to walk right in to pick up and drop off books, use computers for internet access, and take tests for certifications and licenses. Other groups are using the spaces for family literacy, social work sessions, and for educational purposes.

Director Jerry Keiser explained how the library has also partnered with Seaford School District to hand out lunches to children under 18.

"Once the pandemic hit in March, we started regular lunches at the library and other places in the community," Keiser said. "But mostly here in the library we have done eight thousand lunches since the pandemic started for our students and the community."

But, some libraries are playing it on the safe side. At the Lewes Public Library, it is empty except for some staff members. It remains closed at this time and Executive Director Lea Rosell said the decision to reopen is discussed weekly.

"We have a staff meeting and we discuss basically community spread and state leadership recommendations and based on those things is how we are making those decisions about what services to offer and what services to pull back on," Rosell said.

Lewes Public Library is offering lobby service and curbside service. Both libraries are offering virtual story time for children and grab and go craft kits.

Seaford District Library is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday while Lewes Public Library offers their lobby pickup hours Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
