(BERLIN, Md.)- A fisherman is recovering after being bitten by a shark on Assateague Island National Seashore Thursday morning.
Park rangers say Mathew Vickers, 33, of Salisbury, walked into the water to grab a shark being reeled in. They say when he reached down to grab the shark, it grabbed him by the foot. Vickers was taken to the hospital, where he had surgery. Doctors had to repair the artery and tendon in his foot which were cut by the shark.
According to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Vickers will undergo a skin graft in the next couple of days. He is looking at a recovery period anywhere from six to eight weeks.
Park rangers say this incident is the first of its kind at Assateague Island National Seashore.
