SOUTH BETHANY TOWN COUNCIL DISCUSSES LOWERING THE SPEED LIMIT ON ROUTE ONE

SOUTH BETHANY, DE— On Thursday, the town of South Bethany held a Council Workshop agenda to discuss the possibility of lowering the speed limit along Route one. Mayor of South Bethany, Tim Saxton, requested the speed be reduced from 35 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour. Members of the Pedestrian Safety council at the Thursday meeting said the reduction of speed limit will help keep pedestrians and cyclists safe.

The Chief of Police Jason Lovins said the change in speed would not provide a significant change to drivers.

“Lowering the speed by 5 miles per hour reduces the stopping distance by 27 feet, which is not a significant change,” Lovins said.

Other members of the council said that a change in the speed limit would have to be year-round, because seasonal changes to the speed limit could confuse drivers.

The Town Council is yet to reach a conclusion on the matter.

The next South Bethany Town Council meeting will be held on Nov. 12.
