(LITTLE CREEK, Del.)- Hunting season is here but accidents occur if not careful when out in the field.
If you want to obtain a hunting license in Delaware you must taking a hunting safety class. The Delaware program is set up where Delaware law requires that you must have 10 ten hours of instruction for a basic hunter safety class.
Two options are offered in Delaware: First a person can attend an hunter safety class at one of the three facilities in Delaware like the one at Little Creek. The class runs two or three days. The second option is taking an online class and receive five hours of instruction. Also, required is one day of field instruction.
Hunting Ed Coordinator Mark Ostroski was one of the instructors. He explained the 4 safety rules.
"The first one is keeping the muzzle in a safe direction, number 2 is treat every every fire arm like it is loaded even when you are sure it is unloaded, number 3 is be able to indentify your target, and number 4 is always keep your finger off the trigger," said Ostroski.
Mark Ostroski told the class how long a hunter should wait before starting the tracking process after shooting it. He added a hunter should wait at least 30 minutes to give them time to calm down.
"If they feel they did not get a good hit and a good solid shot on the deer then should wait a longer time," said Ostroski.
Ostroski explained another step a hunter should do after the kill.
"The next thing you do when you are fortunate enough to find success and harvest that deer you need to immediately tag that deer," said Ostroski.
