(WASHINGTON, D.C) - A plan to prohibit certain transgender people from serving in the military can move forward, as court challenges continue.
The Supreme Court reversed lower-court rulings on January 22nd, 2019 and thus tabled President Trump's policy as cases moved through the courts, while also declining to take up any cases about the ban.
Instead, the justices decided to let those cases move through the lower courts. President trump wants to ban transgender people from the military unless they serve "in their biological sex". Gender transition while serving in the military would also be prohibited.
Senator Tom Carper recalls his time in the Navy when people who were found to be homosexual were not allowed to be in the military, a similar issue that the government has worked through in the past. "People who happen to be homosexual love their country too and they want to serve their country too and in uniform," he says.
"I know it's a difficult issue for a lot of people but what we've found from folks who were previously banned from the military service because they were gay or lesbian, they've actually been great soldiers, sailors, and veterans. My guess is that the folks who are transgender are serving their country well and with pride and conviction," Carper says.
