Surfers Healing Teaches Children with Autism How to Surf

(OCEAN CITY) - Surfers Healing held the 6th annual camp in Ocean City this morning.

Families cheered from the beach as they watch kids glide along the ocean with the help of the volunteers.

"It's just a wonderful think. They're great We can't thank them enough its just a great day. It's probably like his Christmas," expressed Becky Allender.

Allender brings her 8-year-old son to the camp every year.

Surfers Healing started in 1996 in California.

Creator Izzy Paskowitz thought of the idea after realizing surfing brought joy to his autistic son.

Six years ago, Woody German decided to bring this camp to the Ocean City beach and the event keeps growing every year.

"We have about 220 this year. Our first year we had about 90 people and we stepped it up to about 170 and we kept going up," explained German.

He thinks this camp helps families living with autism have a day of no judgment.

"Normal is whatever you are. So they can come here and they can be whoever they are. Nobody is judging them. Everybody is kind of doing something that's their own style," said German.

Close to 200 volunteers came to 37th street beach to spend the day giving joy to these children.

Jim Jung has volunteered for five years because he loves bringing a smile to the kids faces.

"I love seeing the reaction of the kids, but the reaction of the parents is great," said Jung.

The parents were beaming with pride from the sand as they watched their child glide across the ocean.

"What more can I ask for than what we saw out there today. It was fantastic," expressed a parent.

"This little girl blows my mind and exceeds my expectations of what it's like to be a mom, every moment, of every day. When people say "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry," I say I'm not. She's amazing," explained Megan Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald's 4-year-old daughter Eva is pictured above on the shoulders of one of the volunteers.

When WRDE asked her about her experience she said, "It was so much fun! It was good surfing."

Each child surfed in their own unique way, some with the help of the volunteers and others were able to stand on their own and cruise to the sand.

German told WRDE the spots go quickly.
