Sussex County Habitat for Humanity Installs Home Insulation for Free for Low-Income Families

DELMAR, Del - Widely known for its role in giving families a chance at home-ownership, Sussex County Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH) is embarking on a series of efforts aimed at keeping people in the homes they already have. For qualifying Delawareans living in manufactured homes, this includes the the free installation of an insulated skirt.

Teaming up with Delmarva Power, the organization is carrying out the insulation program using a $100,000 grant from Energize Delaware. The goal is to help families better afford their living expenses through energy-efficient renovations. Those with the program say the durable, foam paneling installed at the base of selected homes could drive down utility costs by nearly 25%.

Habitat's Executive Director, Kevin Gilmore, shared that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has not only increased need for assistance among struggling Delawareans, but that the organization's efforts have taken a hit as well with projects requiring a large amount of volunteers currently on hold. However, Gilmore also noted that programs like providing free insulation has allowed for greater outreach. "When we're building houses we're helping 10 or 12 families a year with the life-changing opportunity for a new house," said Gilmore. "Through programs like this we can help many many more people. It's an opportunity for the community to come together as well".

So far, 19 homes are slated to benefit from the free skirting program. Wednesday, a small crew stopped by a house in Delmar where Habitat workers say providing a sense of warmth meant more than safeguarding against the cold. Michael D'Ovidio, SCHFH's Neighborhood Revitalization Manager explained that this recipient had just recently her husband. "This is going to really help make a difference in helping it be warm and comfortable for her," said D'Ovidio.

To be eligible for the insulated skirting program you must be a Delmarva Power customer, meet HUD's 2020 income guidelines, and fill out an application on SCHFH's website.
