Swimming Pool

(REHOBOTH, Del.)- For the time being Rehoboth residents cannot install a swimming pool.

Rehoboth officials recently voted to put a temporary ban on the construction of swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, and whirlpools within residential areas.

The adopted resolution makes it clear that the mayor and commissioners have been receiving many complaints about loud and unruly noise that came from pools on rental properties.

This is the primary concern for the people in favor of the moratorium.

"I have a real sensitivity about noise. And even though they have the right to build the pool, I think they have to take in to consideration the community." and how it affects the community," said Greg Otto, Rehoboth.

According to realty.com, a swimming pool adds up to about two percent to the value of a home.

Berkshire Hathaway Realtor, George Tomasson, tells us the temporary ban shouldn't affect his business.

"My main concern as a realtor is if the moratorium becomes permanent," explained Tomasson. "And that could have an impact on the real estate business in Rehoboth beach."

Some residents around Rehoboth had a hard time accepting the temporary ban.

"It's your house it's your property, build what you want," said Sheila Mastas, Rehoboth.

While others believe the ban is exactly what Rehoboth needs.

"I'm all for restrictions on anything that cranks up the noise factor," said Greg Otto, Rehoboth.

According to Rehoboth Police, From January 1st through September 1st, there were a total of seventy seven noise complaints in Rehoboth.

Of those complaints twelve of them were directly related to pools or hot tubs. The temporary ban is in effect until next April 17th.
