(BRIDGEVILLE,Del.)-The 11th Annual Capital Classic wraps up at Woodbridge High School. The tournament features some of the best middle school basketball players in Delaware.
This year 32 teams competed in the event as their are 16 girl's teams and 16 boys teams.Team invitations and seeding are set on winning percentage, strength of schedule, ability to compete,loyalty to the tournament,and sportsmanship.
Founder and director Bill Ardito explains why this tournament is unique.
"A lot of people referred to this tournament as the "stars of the future","said Ardito.
There are several players who were involved in the Capital Classic and are now in their Hall Of Fame. Some of them include: Corey Corbin and Hassan Corbin who now suit up for the Woodbridge Raiders. Also, Cape's Randy Rickards, Noah Piper, Jerry Harden, and Benijah Laney who now plays for Rutgers University.
The Capital Classic originally began in Dover at the Dover Central Middle School. Last year the tournament went statewide. This year the event kicked off at Conrad Schools of Science and
for the first time it is closing out the tournament at Woodbridge High School.
Middle School Athletic Director Dane Sears said the Woodbridge School district is thrilled to have the Championship games at the 2 year old facility.
"The Capital Classic provides those athletes in the middle school a chance to win a championship or you compete against their peers where it means something at the end of the season," said Sears.
The Seaford and Dover boys and girls basketball teams are the only two to play in the Capital Classic all eleven years.
