(GEORGETOWN, Del.) - The Lower Sussex County chapter of the NAACP wants a Confederate monument in Georgetown removed.
The monument is sponsored by a Confederate remembrance group.
The civil rights organization has asked Delaware lawmakers to have it taken down.
But the state is limited because the monument isn't on public property.
Though, because the group who controls the monument receives state money, there's a chance legislators could step in.
Many Americans, including President Trump, have no issue with any Confederate monuments and they believe we shouldn't try to erase our past.
Most people agree this monument does reflect history, but for many African-Americans, it also represents hate both historically, and presently.
One student at Delaware State University, a historically black college, said he believes those who want to keep the monument want to hold to racial power and dominance.
We reached out to the group sponsoring the monument but no one was available for an interview.
