MILTON, Del.-  A day of food, music, learning, and giving back. The Horseshoe Crab and Shorebird Festival returns to Milton this May.
This year the festival will take place on the grass lot next to the Milton Historical Society. Even with a new location and safety changes, the goal of celebrating horseshoe crab and shorebird migration, remains the same.
"Delaware Bay, this region, supports the largest spawning population of horseshoe crabs in the world. It's really special for our area. They're starting to come up to our beaches now for spawning and they will be in peak spawning when the festival is going on," said Kate Fleming with Delaware Sea Grant.
The day is filled with shopping, eating, and of course learning.Â
"About 15 nature or nautical themed vendors, four or five nature exhibits set up. Things for kids of all ages really, to come and learn about the environment," said Anne Brown with the Milton Chamber of Commerce.
You can start preparing for the festival now with a Coastal Adventure Passport. Visit all five locations listed before the event. Bring in your completed passport to the festival and wins prizes. A copy can be found at The Mercantile downtown, or print one off the Milton chamber website.
After a year off, businesses are welcoming the festival back with open arms. One business owner says the festival brings in new and returning customers.
"Yes indeed, we get a big pop of business which is great. People are already here and then maybe they want to explore the stores. Maybe they're first timers wanting to see Milton," said owner of The Mercantile, Lisa Falzarano.
The Horseshoe Crab and Shore Bird Festival kicks off May 29 from 9 to 3. It's free to stop in and browse.
