Preparations are already underway for the independence day celebration in Georgetown. Even though July 4th is a day filled with barbecues and fun, the holiday is about patriotic pride.
Places like First State Flag at Park Ave on Route 9 get a boost by providing flags for people celebrating America's birthday.
"Generally speaking the fourth of July does pick up volume. People want to be more patriotic during that time of year as well as memorial day, labor day, etc. Everybody wants to have new crisp American flags flying," said Opie Lawson, owner of First State Flag.
Denard Griffith came into the store to pick up his flag which he will proudly display for the holiday.
"I like to honor my country and everything. The flag stands for everything we believe in and want to happen," said Griffith.
What does the American flag mean to you? It's the question we asked people in Georgetown.
"It means freedom and I think the fact that the men and women who fought for our country, that's what the flag stands for. They fought to give us the freedom. It's something to be proud of," said Connie Magee of Georgetown.
Mary Beth Burton from Millsboro said, "Well, it's important because we have freedom of speech in our country and other countries don't. That's what it stands for to me."
It's the same pride bringing people to flag stores, to help celebrate the 4th of July all while helping the area's economy.
"It's good to support local businesses, whatever they may sell. So I just ask the locals to come out and support local small businesses," said Lawson.
First State Flag also installs flag poles in Sussex County.
