(REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.) -The Dewey and Rehoboth Beach area is the destination of choice for many. More than 65,000 people are traveling on Route One about every day and that figure is from the Delaware Department Of Transportation in 2016. More than 4 million people visit down downtown Rehoboth and it seems this year more people are coming to this tax-free hot spot.Carol Everhart has been the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Executive Director for 29 years.
"Of course tourism is our economic engine for development and that is what runs us and clearly it has been increasing in visitation this year and you can see it visually and I have had several businesses that tell me that despite a wet spring that they are having a great year so far," said Everhart.
Dolle's Popcorn and Saltwater Taffy has been one of the most popular places on the boardwalk for years. This time right now is when they are the busiest. Mike Ibach runs the business.
"About the 15th of July through August 15 is the peak season for us and it might be different for another business but that is for us," said Ibach.
Some businesses are continuing in this area.
"More visitation and more people means we need to have more accommodations and there is one planned in downtown Rehoboth as well as planned on Route 1," said Everhart.
During the summer expect traffic delays when coming to the beach.
