LEWES, Del.-Â Enjoying the fruits of their labor. That is what the Lewes Tulip celebration is all about.Â
In fact, you can buy some tulips of your own to plant at your home by visiting the Second Street Citizens Bank. Members of Lewes in Bloom will be there Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walking tours can also be scheduled at galleries and museums.
Lewes Mayor Ted Becker says the activities will be informational even without some staples due to the pandemic.
"This year there will be no engaged tours, but there will be lots of walking tours that are self-guided," Becker said. "There are maps throughout the city that the chamber has developed to help people find their way around, but the tulips are pretty much everywhere."
While you are walking around the sites and seeing the tulips, COVID- 19 safety protocols are in place. Social distancing should be done when possible and the city of Lewes requires mask wearing in public places between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Tulips are a part of the Dutch heritage that the city celebrates during this event. Executive Director of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Betsy Reamer says it is also an unofficial transition to a busy spring and summer.
"It comes at a time of year when business has been rather slow and so it sort of kicks off the season for our merchants and businesses," Reamer said. "It just gives people an opportunity if they have never been to Lewes to see what is so wonderful about this town."
History buffs and green thumbs can especially enjoy seeing the tulips grow in abundance while learning what makes Lewes so special.
The event will continue through April 11. For more information on dates and times of tours, please visit https://www.leweschamber.com/news/community/12th-annual-lewes-tulip-celebration-blooms-april-2-11-2021.
