Troopers Investigate Serious Crash Involving Pedestrian

(NEW CASTLE, Del.) - The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious motor vehicle crash in which a pedestrian was critically injured.

The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016, as Gabriel P. Niedziela, 69, of Richboro, Pennsylvania, was operating a 2005 Mercury Sable northbound in the middle lane of US Rt. 13 just north of Hessler Boulevard. It was at this point that Niedziela observed a dark object, later identified as Michael R. Shuda, 60, of Wilmington, walking in the roadway. Gabriel Niedziela attempted to swerve his vehicle to the left in an attempt to avoid striking the male subject; however, the collision was unavoidable.

The right front bumper of the Sable struck the pedestrian who came to rest in the right hand lane. Niedziela was able to bring his vehicle to a controlled stop on the right shoulder just north of the victim.

Michael Shuda was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics. He was then removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition.

Gabriel Niedziela was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police. Alcohol and speed are not factors in this case and no charges have been filed.

"Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway, utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding. When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light colored clothing and reflective materials. Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety."
