Tropical Storm Fay Brings Inland Flooding for Sussex County

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del - Sussex County towns west of Coastal Highway saw quite a bit of rain and wind Friday as Tropical Storm Fay made its way through the region.

While the coast was hit the hardest, areas like Long Neck, and Oak Orchard also saw the storm's impact with flooded lawns and roadways.

Nick Campbell, a student of the Cape Henlopen School district spoke from first hand experience on the varied impacts of the storm. “Our yard wasn’t flooded, but back at my other house, Clay road, it’s just straight flooded you can’t even go past it," said Campbell.

Elizabeth Sheppard of Millsboro said Friday’s flooding was the likes of which she had not seen before. “Not like this; not out here,” she said.

Inland areas saw anywhere from 2 to 6 inches of rain. For Sheppard, today’s storm was a reminder of unresolved drainage issues in her community.

“[On] River Rd, they’ve talked about putting stuff down there, but they’ve never done anything to it,” said Sheppard. She continued expressing the need for proactive measures to be taken saying, “We have no drainage here. No sewers, and with the buildings being up so high up here the water’s just going to come down”.
