(Milton, Del.)- A suspect is still at large as Delaware State Police continue to investigate an unsolved shooting in Milton.
Family and friends of Regalio Martinez Hernandez, 20, of Milton, and his fourteen year old brother try to make sense of the double shooting.
Hernandez was killed and the teenager was injured. Now a week later, police have no suspects and no weapon has been found. Troopers do not believe it was a murder-suicide. So they're asking for the public's help.
"To see things that bad happen to children -- young children is really sad. it hurts me to my heart," said Sabrina Leggins who says she knew
the two victims.
The incident occurred around 2:42 a.m. Monday November 24, 2014 when the Sussex County Emergency Operation Center (9-1-1) received a call of shots fired in the area of Park Royal Apartments located at 501 Palmer Street. A Milton Police Officer responded to the call and found two male victims parked in a vehicle outside the 400 building with gunshot wounds. First aid was rendered by the officer until Sussex County Paramedics and EMS arrived and transported the two victims to an area hospital.
"I just don't know why somebody would want to come and try to takes their lives like that," said Jeanette Leggins who says the victims were practically family.
Hernandez was pronounced dead on arrival. The 14-year-old is in critical condition.
Neighbors say this is devastating, especially with Thanksgiving around the corner.
"It really makes me feel terribly bad, especially for the mother," Jeanette said remorsefully.
"Now she's got one son that's clinging to life and one son that's lost his life."
"They stayed to themselves. His brother was a video game type kid. So I just don't understand what happened," said the victim's friend, Tyrell Hazzard.
At the request of the Milton Police Department, the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit was contacted to assume the investigation. Currently, detectives continue their investigation.
If anyone has any information is asked to contact Detective J. King at 302-741-2821 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
