Weekday Holiday Stifles Some Businesses in Berlin

(BERLIN, Md.) - A holiday that falls in the middle of the week proves to not be as lucrative as a weekend holiday for some businesses in Worcester County.

Whether customers swarmed in or thinned out leading up to Fourth of July, businesses noticed a thing or two about this year's holiday that fell on a Wednesday.

"Fourth of July on a Wednesday is a little different," said Steve Frene, the owner of Victorian Charm who explained that a weekday holiday can be a hit or miss for many businesses.

"It messes it up because everybody's got to work the next day. You really don't want to take off two days and make it a long weekend. So when it's closer to a Friday or a Monday, a lot of people will make it a longer weekend and it focuses all the tourist traffic in one weekend."

Emily Vock, owner of children's clothing store Heart of Gold, said business was steady and busy up until the Fourth of July, when customer visits scaled back.

Vock said she's hopeful business will pick back up again closer to the weekend.

"It's definitely busier when it falls on a weekend but being on a Wednesday it was a little tough because most people are getting off work. But then maybe a lot of people came and stayed for the whole week. It was a great weekend leading up to it," Vock said.

Despite the oddly-positioned holiday, downtown Berlin's businesses are still looking ahead.

"We're off to a great start. Summer's doing well and our weather's nice and hot so it's going well," said Frene.

Visitors still have plenty of opportunity to shop for great deals and finds throughout the summer in downtown Berlin. "America's coolest small town" still hosts plenty of events that typically attract hundreds of visitors and business to the area.
