(WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.) - Girl Scouts is dedicated to being a leadership program for girls. One of their focuses is STEM: science, technology, engineering, and math. Denise Eberspeaker says that according to research, girls excel more in an all-girl surrounding.
"So research shows that girls will excel more if they are in that all-girl environment. This is especially true with stem programs. If you put the boys and the girls in the room together the boys will take more of that leadership role and the girls will just fall back. If you put the girl in the room without the boys they will take that leadership role" says Eberspeaker.
Girl Scouts tested this research.
"First we went in and did the STEM program with boys and girls in the room, they we did it with just the girls and the principal was totally won over and said yes we want girl scouts here every year doing this program."
Girl Scouts go camping, do community service, and many activities that Boy Scouts do.
Girl Scouts own 4 campsites and a lake on the Delmarva peninsula. They go zip lining, kayaking, canoeing, archery, horseback riding, paddle boarding, and more.
Girls Scouts also focus on learning financial literacy and anti-bullying.
Girl Scouts earn patches and badges. Paches go on the back of their uniform and badges go on the front.
The highest award a girl scout could earn is the gold award, which is equivalent to the eagle scout. It can earn them college scholarships and looks great when applying for jobs.
Girls Scouts have a great relationship with the Boy Scouts and the two organizations do service projects together.
