Why Girls Will be Able to Join Boy Scouts

(SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.) - During the next round of scouting sign-ups, girls will be able to join Boy Scouts.

"It's not about male, it's not about female, it's about the curriculum that Boy Scouts of America offers," says Wayne Stacey, Sussex County's Boy Scouts of America Committee Chairman.

Boy Scouts offers kids different activities than Girl Scouts, and teaches different life skills. It comes down to what kids want to do for fun and what they want to learn.

Allowing girls to join Boy Scouts could make things easier for busy parents. The Boy Scout council wants to meet the needs of today's families.

"Families are so busy today that they need to make a choice, where a son and daughter can participate in the same scouting program."

The gummy bears represent a Boy Scout pack. Each packs are divided in dens. Boys and girls will be in separate dens that meet once a week. And then they will come together as a pack for a meeting once a month. Girls can also have an all girls-boy scout pack.

Girls and boys will also be sleeping in different tents when they go on camping trips.

Other countries have co-ed scouting. Girls can enter Boy Scouts during the next round of sign-ups, which will happen in just a few months at the beginning of 2018.

If you have questions call the local Boy Scouts of America main office at 302-622-3300. You can ask to speak with Mr. Ray Teat.

Boy Scouts have a great relationship with the Girl Scouts and the two organizations do service projects together.
