(SALISBURY, Md.) - A Wicomico County teenager convicted of raping a 15 year-old girl has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
A jury found Jocori Scarborough, 18, of Delmar, guilty of all charges against him -- including raping a classmate of his in hallway at Parkside High School back in May.
He faces 10 years for his rape conviction and one year, one day for a gun charge. Both are to be served consecutively, according to court document.
Eddie Gonzalez, the lawyer for Scarborough says there were a lot holes in the prosecution's case. In his closing argument Gonzalez told the jury that this was a high school love affair gone terribly wrong. Gonzalez alluded to video taken right after the alleged rape showing the victim acting "completely normal." While the prosecution argued that the victim was in shock. They say the 15-year-old thought she knew her alleged attacker. And never consented to sex of any kind.
The jury took a little more than an hour to hand down a guilty verdict in the case. Scarborough was found guilty of rape, assault, false imprisonment and other charges.
Destiny Clark, a former classmate of Scarborough says she is partly in disbelief about the verdict.
"He didn't seem like how everybody said he raped her. He was quiet and stuck to his friends."
The trial took just two days to sort through all the evidence.
The prosecution called eleven witnesses -- the defense one.
The fifteen year old female victim testified she had previously been in a relationship with Scarborough. She admitted to kissing him prior to the attack.
Images show the victim with Scarborough in a hallway. Though the attack happened out of the view of any cameras. The prosecution had a forensic expert testify that Scarborough's semen was found on the victim's underwear.
A Scarborough family spokesman says the conviction was unjust.
"To have a charge of rape and be registered as a sex offender -- there was not enough evidence to present to the jury for him to receive the conviction he received," says Lamarr Brown, an activist for the Organization of African American Concerns.
Scarborough showed little emotion as the verdict was read. It wasn't until he was taken away into custody that he took off a pair of glasses he was wearing and hung his head in disappointment. His family plans to appeal.
As for sentencing, no date has been set yet.
