American Flag Guardians Collect Flags and Donations to Help Lift the Spirits of Veterans

LEWES, Del.- The land of the free and the home of the brave. A nation that has been protected by brave men and women for hundreds of years. All of them sacrificing their lives for each and every one of us.

A group of veterans started the American Flag Guardians organization in an effort to assist other veterans who can not afford a new flag or be able to put up their own flag at their home.

The guardians are constantly around Lewes installing flag mounts and providing brand new flags to veterans who want one.

American Flag Guardians President John Nehrbas says there is a great need for veterans who cannot afford a new American flag or put one up themselves. That is why they hold collection events like this.

"There is a big need for it," Nehrbas said. "We fix one neighbor's flag and we will get calls for other veterans and we will get out there and get flag mount, mount it up for them and help them maintain it as well."

One creative way the flags donated will be used is as tokens of appreciation that are mailed out to veterans. The stars are cut out and a thank you message is provided on the other side.

It reads: "I am a part of an American flag. I have flown over a home in the United States of America. I can no longer fly. The sun and the winds have caused me to become tattered. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten."
