Latest Storm Results In Flooded Roads & High Winds Along Northern Coast

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del.- Despite the dreary conditions, people were on Rehoboth Avenue and the boardwalk this afternoon. Light rain was coming down but the wind was the bigger story causing waves to go sky high and water crashing into the dunes.

Brian Hollenbach couldn't believe what he saw.

"We're used to seeing waves breaking to shore but they're breaking way out but this is really bizarre," Hollenbach said. "I haven't seen it this high. I've never seen it like this."

Nick Reaney is celebrating his 30th birthday this weekend with his parents from California. He says they struggled with water at the Indian River campground Thursday night.

"The one spot in the park as far as tent sites was like under a foot of water I guess from the inlet," Reaney said. "It may be high tide. I showed up at like 1:30 and saw the spot. But luckily we got our spot moved."

River Road in Oak Orchard was flooded in two spots. DelDOT was forced to close the road around 11 a.m. Many people had to turn around at the corner of Chiefs Road and River Road.

DNREC told WRDE it's trying to prevent this kind of flooding. It completed drainage projects in June on Mercer Avenue and in Captain's Grant Mobile Park. But it says it still needs time and millions of dollars to find a permanent solution for River Road.
