Laura Madara Back To School Health Fair Provides Free Supplies & Safety Tips To Students

SELBYVILLE, Del.- Safety first and school second.

The Sussex Safe Kids Coalition along with the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company and the Indian River School District held its Back to School Health Fair allowing kids to learn and earn prizes at every table they visited. Free school supplies were also handed out.

"We’re promoting back to school, injury prevention, health initiatives and just get out into the community and talk to children about what they can do to remain safe," Lowe said.

For some students, last school year was spent at home as COVID-19 caused virtual learning to take place. Kim O’Malley who teaches injury prevention at the fire school says kids may have forgotten some safety measures to keep in mind.

"Students were not in school in person so I feel that some of the safety messages were lost," O'Malley said. "So this will reiterate and reinforce some of those safety messages that need to be reminded of families and students going back to school."

The fair has been named in memory of Selbyville Fire Police Officer Laura Madara who was killed while responding to a car crash back in April. Her father Kenneth says there has been an overflow of support since her passing including the hosting of this event.

"Laura was very involved with "Safe Kids" and she thought a lot of doing that program as well as other things she was involved in," Kenneth said.

Laura wore many hats and impacted so many people which is why the Delaware Fire School plans to continue this event with her name associated with it.
