Locals React to the "Last Call" Boat Fire in Ocean City Inlet

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Seven people were rescued by a good Samaritan, after their charter boat went up in flames over the weekend in Ocean City. The boat, "Last Call," caught fire near the south jetty at the Ocean City inlet around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses said Last Call was a popular boat in the Ocean City fishing community. All seven people on the boat got off safely. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

"It was definitely a crazy, crazy thing. A lot of my friends here witnessed it, and you don't see something like that everyday," said fisher, Brett Austin Chauncey.

Kevin Twilley, who knows the owner of the "Last Call," was out on a charter when he saw the boat.

"It was engulfed. The guys had the boat since 1983. Real nice guy did a lot of charters around Ocean City," said Twilley.

The United States Coast Guard says the boat requested help and Station Ocean City was launched, but by the time they arrived, the civilian boat had rescued everyone on board. No one was hurt, but the boat is totaled.

"That boat was really well known around here so seeing it on fire was shocking," said Twilley.

The boat sunk and what little was left of it was towed away Sunday night.

"It was definitely a scary experience, and I could only imagine what the people on that boat were going through in that point in time," said Chauncey.
