LEWES, Del. - Plans to add different types of affordable housing in Lewes are taking shape.Â
According to the Lewes Planning Commission Housing Subcommittee's presentation in the Mayor and City council workshop meeting Thursday night, the accessory dwelling units up for discussion would be on the same lot as a primary house, like in this graphic:
The committee says the units could be detached or a converted garage, basement, or attic with a separate bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.
Separate Accessory Dwelling Units would be limited to 900 square feet and 1.5 stories. The property would be required to have at least two off-street parking spaces.
Rent could be in the $800-$1200 range. The Historic Preservation Architectural Review Commission would review any projects for accessory dwelling units in the historic district.
According to the Housing Subcommittee's presentation, these accessory dwelling units should be by-right in residential zoning districts. That doesn't include mobile homes or where homeowners associations or deeds restrict them.
The next steps include the Lewes Planning Commission's meeting on October 18th.
