LEWES, De - At an event originally scheduled to discuss transatlantic relations among Delaware leaders and European ambassadors, the news that General Colin Powell had died became part of the conversation. While at the conference's session at the University of Delaware Lewes Campus, Croatia's Ambassador to the United States, Pjer Simunovic said he worked with Powell on several diplomatic matters when the General was Secretary of State in the George W. Bush administration. "A great American, a great diplomat, and a great soldier has passed away. May he rest in peace," Simunovic told WRDE.
At the conference in Newark, DE, Senator Chris Coons reflected on Powell's ability to put country above political party. "He was the sort of role model of putting our nation first, putting the mission first, and be willing to work with whoever it takes in order to get something done," Coons said. "His leadership in war, in peace, in diplomacy, and in civilian national service really set the standard for others to follow."
Monday's event was an effort to strengthen Delaware's ties with European Union member states.
