WILMINGTON, Del. - Flags in Delaware have been ordered to be lowered to half-staff on Dec. 7 in observance of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

"On this day, we honor the brave Americans who lost their lives in the attack on Pearl Harbor," said Gov. John Carney. "We owe a debt of gratitude to all who have defended our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom."

Flags should remain lowered until sunset.

Also on Thursday, veterans from multiple organizations will gather in Smyrna at Lake Como to commemorate the attack in Hawaii that launched America into WWII. The event will take place at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, which depicts an image of the attack in stone and includes a 3,000 pound anchor from a 1942 U.S. Navy destroyer. The memorial was completed in 2018 and has served as a meeting spot in the past, as well.

"We invite all American patriots to join us to honor those from the Greatest Generation as well as show your love and support for America during these tumultuous times," said Terry Baker, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 83 president and annual event coordinator.

Veterans from the Town of Smyrna, Vietnam Veterans of America and Townsend's Firebase Lloyd will be gathering at 11 a.m.
