GEORGETOWN, Del. — People who live in Georgetown had a chance to weigh in on the future of biking and walking in their town during a Delaware Department of Transportation public workshop held at the Georgetown Public Library Tuesday evening.

DelDOT is developing a Georgetown Bike and Pedestrian Plan aimed at improving infrastructure and safety for non-drivers. On Tuesday, planners and leaders met with locals to gather feedback, showcase ideas, and listen to firsthand experiences from those who rely on the town’s sidewalks, trails and bike paths.

"We rely on public feedback and public review of the things that, doled out in the town. Georgetown wants to, wants to improve because really, the users of, the bike lanes and the roads are really the experts." said Brian Olszak with DelDOT.

Jim Tyler, who attended the workshop, attested to concerns about the lack of clear connections between the longer bike path on the edge of town and Georgetown’s iconic circle.

"It's been kind of a mystery how, the end of the longer bike path would filter into the middle of Georgetown to reach the circle or really see the beauty of Georgetown." said Tyler.

Example ideas the town manager provided included:

  • More flashing signage and additional crosswalks
  • New speed bumps and speed tables
  • Additional dedicated bike lanes
  • Improved connectivity along sidewalks and roads

The Georgetown Bike and Pedestrian Plan remains in development, and feedback from workshops like this will guide the final design. DelDOT encourages locals to stay involved as planning continues through the year. Public comment on the project can also be submitted on the DelDOT website.
