LEWES, Del.- The Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee will discuss cycling rules and etiquette on the bike trails at its meeting Sept. 26.
The Delaware Department of Transportation is working in conjunction with the City of Lewes on a long-term bike plan that aims to improve the growing network of trails throughout the city. A recent study found safety is the number one concern for cyclists in Lewes.
Many cyclists cite skinny trails, improper e-bike use and lack of consideration for other cyclists as some of the issues plaguing the trails. Jean Whiddon lives right near the Lewes - Georgetown trail.
"I haven't witnessed any disasters, but I feel sometimes like it's a disaster waiting to happen," Whiddon said.
Whiddon said poor etiquette on the trails has been a long-term issue. She has been pushing for things like increased signage and clearer rules for many years.
"I think [signage] would go a long way. Just signage beside the path and on the path," she said.
The committee will meet Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. to discuss and potentially take action on some of the issues. In addition, there will be a public workshop on Oct. 11 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Lewes Public Library to discuss the Lewes Bike Plan.
