SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - Smoke and haze from a large wildfire burning in the Pine Barrens of Ocean County, New Jersey, are now impacting areas of Sussex County, as shifting winds carry smoke from the fire zone.

The wildfire, which broke out earlier this week in the Forest Wildlife Area, has already scorched more than 13 square miles. As of Tuesday evening, New Jersey fire crews report the fire is only about 10 percent contained.

Due to strong and variable winds, smoke from the fire has traveled southward, reaching parts of southern Delaware. Sussex County has reports haze, reduced visibility and a noticeable burning odor in the air.

The Sussex County Emergency Communications Division has received several calls from people concerned about the smoke and odor. According to responding fire crews, these conditions are linked directly to the ongoing New Jersey wildfire. "At this time, there is no immediate threat to the safety of Sussex County residents or visitors. The Sussex County Department of Public Safety-Emergency Communications continues to closely monitor the situation."

While the smoke does not pose an immediate risk to public safety, residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, are urged to stay indoors or reduce time spent outside during periods of heavy haze. The county also asks people to reserve 9-1-1 calls for emergencies only.
